Privacy Policy
Hanzily is an Android app published by TNPixel ("we", "us"). The short version: your learning data stays on your phone and we never receive it. Hanzily has no account, no server of ours for your data and no analytics SDK of its own. This policy lists what is processed and by whom.
What stays on your device
- Learning data: flashcards and review history, study progress, streaks and goals, notes, word lists, handwriting and writing-practice results, practice and mock-exam results, bookmarks, search history and settings are stored in a private database (Room) and preferences (SharedPreferences) on your phone.
- Scan captures: images you capture with the camera reader and the text recognised from them are stored on your device only if you save them, and are not uploaded by us.
- Dictionary and lesson content are bundled with the app and work offline.
Camera
The CAMERA permission is used only when you open the camera reader. Images are processed on your device by Google ML Kit text recognition (Chinese) and are not uploaded by us.
Microphone and speech
The microphone (RECORD_AUDIO permission) is used only in speaking and pronunciation tools, and only when you tap record. Audio is kept on your device. Exception: in the "speak and check" features, Android's speech recognition service (provided by Google) may process your speech to return text. That processing is done by Google under its own terms, not by us, and you can skip those features and use the rest of the app without them.
Models downloaded from Google
ML Kit models for handwriting recognition (Digital Ink), Chinese text recognition and translation are downloaded from Google when you first use those features. The download request goes to Google (and reveals, as any web request does, your IP address and device information); we send no learning data in it. After download, recognition and translation run on your device.
Other on-device features
- Text-to-speech uses your device's text-to-speech engine, provided by your device or by Google.
- Notifications and reminders are local: Android notifications and WorkManager jobs scheduled on your phone to remind you to review. They can be turned off in the app or in Android settings.
- Widgets show content from your on-device data on your home screen.
- Clipboard: Hanzily reads the clipboard only when you open the clipboard lookup tool while the app is in the foreground, to look up the text you copied. It is not stored or uploaded by us unless you save it.
- Backup (optional): Hanzily can create a backup file that you choose where to save (for example in your files or your own cloud app). We provide no cloud sync and never receive the file.
Services used by the app
- Google AdMob shows ads to free users. Ads are not shown in drills or exams. AdMob may collect device and advertising identifiers (the Android advertising ID), approximate location derived from your IP address and usage data to serve and measure ads. In the EEA, the UK and similar regions you are asked for consent through Google's consent form (UMP) and can change your choice later. Premium removes ads. See Google's advertising policy.
- RevenueCat manages Premium subscriptions. It receives an anonymous app user identifier, your purchase and subscription status and basic technical information (app version, device model, OS and country), as described in RevenueCat's privacy policy. We do not receive your name, email or payment details.
- Google Play processes payments and provides Google Play services.
- Google ML Kit: see the sections above.
Data sources
The dictionary and lesson data come from open projects: CC-CEDICT (CC BY-SA 4.0), Unihan, Make Me a Hanzi, Arphic fonts (stroke outlines), Tatoeba (CC BY) and community HSK word lists. These are bundled in the app and are not fetched from servers while you use it. Details and licences: Data & licences.
Permissions
- Camera: camera reader only, when you open it.
- Microphone: pronunciation and speaking tools only, when you tap record.
- Notifications and boot completed: reminders you turn on, restored after a restart.
- Internet and network state: ML Kit model downloads, ads and purchases. Dictionary, flashcards and lessons work offline.
- Vibrate and Biometric (if offered): haptic cues and optional app lock where available.
What we do not do
- We do not require an account and we do not run servers that receive your learning data, images or recordings.
- We do not use analytics or crash-reporting SDKs beyond the services listed above.
- We do not sell your personal data.
Children
Hanzily is not directed to children under 13 and is rated for ages 13 and up. A learner-friendly Family mode exists for the interface, but it does not change this. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your data by clearing or resetting it in the app, or by uninstalling the app (which removes all locally stored data). Backup files you saved elsewhere stay until you delete them.
- Reset or limit your Android advertising ID in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads, and change ad consent where offered.
- Revoke camera, microphone or notification access in Android settings at any time.
- Manage or cancel subscriptions in Google Play → Profile → Payments & subscriptions.
- Depending on where you live (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, LGPD and similar laws) you may have rights to access, correct, delete, export or object to the processing of personal data held about you. We hold no personal profile about you; for data held by RevenueCat or Google, contact them or write to us and we will help.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date above. Material changes will also be noted in the app or on its Google Play page.
